Description
Brazil ND (1917) 1 Mil Réis Pick 5 Estampa 9A ABNC PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated Minor Stains
This Brazil Thesouro Nacional ND (1917) 1 Mil Réis banknote is Pick P-5, certified by PMG as 63 Choice Uncirculated. The PMG holder identifies Printer: ABNC, serial number 8A 46401, and Estampa 9A. Importantly, PMG also records the holder comment Minor Stains, which is fully disclosed as part of the certification.
Issued under the Thesouro Nacional during Brazil’s First Republic, the note represents a denomination of 1 mil-réis, equivalent to 1,000 réis within the historic Brazilian monetary system. The PMG attribution of ND (1917) indicates a no-date issue assigned to 1917, placing the note within an important period of early twentieth-century Brazilian federal paper money.
The face carries the formal inscription of the República dos Estados Unidos do Brasil, the constitutional name used for Brazil during the republican period. At left is an engraved architectural vignette set within landscaped grounds, while the right side contains a classical allegorical figure. The central denomination panel reads Um Mil Réis, surrounded by elaborate lathework, engraved borders, and overprinted signatures characteristic of government currency produced during the era.
The holder identifies the printer as ABNC, the American Bank Note Company, whose finely engraved work appears throughout the design. The combination of intricate guilloche patterns, detailed pictorial engraving, ornamental lettering, and multicolor underprinting reflects the security and artistic conventions of internationally produced banknotes of the early twentieth century.
The reverse is printed predominantly in orange and centers on an equestrian monument framed by elaborate geometric and floral engraving. Large denomination devices and the inscription República dos Estados Unidos do Brasilreinforce the note’s federal identity. Together, the architectural, allegorical, and monumental imagery gives the issue the formal civic character typical of Brazilian Treasury notes from the period.
The mil-réis had deep roots in Brazil’s monetary history and remained the country’s principal accounting unit until the monetary reforms of the 1940s. Notes such as this Pick 5, Estampa 9A therefore document the long-lived réis system during the republican era, before Brazil eventually transitioned to the cruzeiro.
Certified PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated with the disclosed holder comment Minor Stains, this example combines attractive certified preservation with an early republican Brazilian type, ABNC engraving, and a clearly attributed Estampa 9A variety. It is an appealing piece for collectors of Brazilian paper money, Latin American currency, ABNC-printed notes, early twentieth-century banknotes, and certified world currency.
