Description
Ukraine 1992 2,000,000 Karbovantsiv Compensation Certificate Remainder Pick 91Br PMG 64 Choice
Uncirculated
This Ukraine Treasury 1992 2,000,000 Karbovantsiv compensation certificate is Pick P-91Br, certified by PMG as 64 Choice Uncirculated. The PMG holder identifies serial number VL073152 and, importantly, classifies the piece as a Remainder. This is not a conventional circulating banknote; it belongs to Ukraine’s specialized compensation-certificate issue associated with the turbulent economic transition that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The face is headed “Україна” (Ukraine) and “Сертифікат” (Certificate) and states a value of 2,000,000 Ukrainian karbovantsiv. The printed text identifies its purpose as compensation for citizens’ monetary savings held in the Savings Bank of Ukraine and insurance payments connected with the former state insurance system. The design incorporates Ukraine’s trident emblem and a large architectural vignette at left, surrounded by pastel blue, green, and pink security patterns.
The reverse is dominated by the printed terms and conditions governing use of the certificate. These provisions explain that the certificates represented compensation tied to savings and insurance balances and could be used in connection with privatization of certain state property. The printed terms also state that interest or dividends were not accrued and that the certificates were valid until July 1, 1997.
These certificates emerged from Ukraine’s difficult early independence period, when rapid inflation severely eroded the real value of savings accumulated under the Soviet monetary system. Compensation certificates were part of an effort to recognize those losses while also linking citizens to the country’s privatization program. Contemporary economic documentation describes paper compensation instruments issued against Savings Bank and state-insurance deposits as part of this broader restructuring.
The Remainder attribution is particularly important for this example. A remainder is an unused or incompletely issued piece retained outside normal finalized circulation, and PMG specifically identifies this note as Pick 91Br Remainder. Collector references likewise distinguish remainder examples of the 2,000,000-karbovantsiv compensation certificate from normally completed or stamped pieces.
Certified PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated, this P-91Br Remainder offers collectors an unusual artifact from Ukraine’s first years as an independent state. Its enormous denomination, compensation purpose, connection with post-Soviet savings losses and privatization, and explicitly certified remainder status make it especially relevant to collections of Ukrainian paper money, post-Soviet currency, compensation certificates, inflation-era issues, and specialized certified world paper.
