Venezuela's 200 Bolívares Note Equals 200 Million Old Bolívares

Why a note that says 200 stands for two hundred million, what is printed on it, and where it sits in Venezuela's string of redenominations.

The short answer

The Venezuelan 200 Bolívares Digitales note equals 200 million bolívares soberanos, the currency it replaced. In October 2021 the Banco Central de Venezuela removed six zeros from the bolívar, so one new bolívar stands for 1,000,000 of the old. The note carries the date August 17, 2023, and was announced in 2024 alongside a 500 Bolívares note.

What is the Venezuelan 200 Bolívares Digitales note?

It is one of two new top denominations the Banco Central de Venezuela (BCV) announced in 2024, a 200 and a 500 bolívares note, said at the time to enter circulation gradually. Voice of America reported the announcement came almost three years after the current family of notes was introduced with six fewer zeros.

The notes are dated August 17, 2023, which is why collectors catalog them as 2023 even though the announcement came a year later. That gap between the printed date and the day a note reached the public is common, and it is worth knowing before you search for one.

How much is 200 bolívares in old bolívares?

Two hundred million. The 2021 redenomination set one bolívar digital equal to 1,000,000 bolívares soberanos (Bs.S), so 200 Bs.D equals 200 × 1,000,000 = 200,000,000 Bs.S. This is why our listings describe the note as "200 million bolívar": that is the figure on the older currency's scale, not a statement about what the note buys today.

How many zeros has Venezuela removed from the bolívar?

Fourteen, across three redenominations.

Year Zeros removed Name of the bolívar
2008 3 Bolívar fuerte (Bs.F)
2018 5 Bolívar soberano (Bs.S)
2021 6 Bolívar digital (Bs.D)

Multiply the three and one bolívar today stands for 100 trillion bolívares from before 2008, a figure the Colombian-based outlet NTN24 also cited when the 200 and 500 notes were announced. Hyperinflation is what makes this stretch of Venezuelan paper money collectible: each redenomination left a distinct family of notes behind, and the 2021 family is the youngest.

What is printed on the 200 Bolívares note?

Front
The title "República Bolivariana de Venezuela," the numeral 200, "Doscientos Bolívares," the date and the signatures across the top, and several portraits of Simón Bolívar along the bottom, drawn from paintings by artists including Philippe Froesch and Rita Matilde de la Peñuela, according to the Numismatic Catalog of Venezuela.
Back
The national coat of arms, the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge over Lake Maracaibo and a view of the Naval Battle of Lake Maracaibo after a painting by Ambroise Louis Garneray, with the inscription "200 Años 1823–2023 Batalla Naval" marking the battle's bicentennial.
Security features cataloged
A color-shifting numeral 200 near the top printed in optically variable ink, and a latent image reading "BCV" lower on the front.
The number on the note is a unit of account. The history behind it is the object.

Why do collectors look for consecutive 200 Bolívares notes?

Banknotes are printed in sheets, cut, counted and banded, and the notes inside a band usually carry serial numbers in order. Keep a run together and it shows exactly how the printer produced it: one number after the next, top note to bottom. That is the appeal of a banded pack, and it is why a lot of 10, 25 or 50 cut in order from one bundle is a different object from a handful of random notes.

Planet Banknote cut one bundle of the 200 Bolívares into six sizes in October 2026, from a single note to a full banded pack of 100. Our photos show a representative lot, so the serials on the lot you receive will differ from the ones pictured, but they will run in order.

How can you tell a lot of banknotes is really consecutive?

  1. Ask for the first and last serial numbers in the lot.
  2. Subtract the numeric parts. The difference should be one less than the number of notes.
  3. Check the prefix letters match on both ends.

A lot of 25 that begins at A12583001 should end at A12583025: 25 − 1 = 24, and 1 + 24 = 25. If the arithmetic does not close, notes are missing from the run.
