Banknote Gifts for Collectors: The 2026 Holiday Guide

Real money from history is a gift with a story attached. Here are our picks at both ends of the budget, plus how to give a note so it arrives in perfect shape.

The short answer

Good banknote gifts tell a story the recipient can hold: a 2008 Zimbabwe 100 Trillion, a 1923 German railway note, a Venezuelan note that stood for 100 million of the old currency. Under $50 buys two genuine uncirculated notes or a pack of 100. Around $150 buys a pair of hyperinflation classics. For a serious collector, a PMG-graded note or a complete set makes a trophy gift. Prices are as of October 19, 2026.

What makes a banknote a good gift?

Three things. A story the person can tell in one sentence, because that is what gets the note out of the drawer and into conversation. Condition, because a crisp uncirculated note looks like a gift and a tired one looks like change. And presentation: a sleeve or holder and a card that says what the note is.

Pairs work especially well. Several of our notes are buy one, get one, which means one to give and one to keep, or two to give.

How do you give a banknote as a gift?

  1. Protect it. Keep the note in a currency sleeve or rigid holder. Never fold, tape or clip the note itself.
  2. Box it flat. Put the holder in a flat gift box or between two stiff cards before you wrap, so the note cannot bend in transit.
  3. Write the story. A card with the country, the date, the denomination and one sentence about what the note meant turns a piece of paper into a piece of history.
  4. Keep it out of the heat. Under a tree is fine. A dashboard or a sunny window is not.
  5. Order early. For Christmas delivery inside the contiguous United States, USPS recommends mailing by December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Allow a few days on top for the dealer to pack and ship.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good banknote gift for someone who doesn't collect?

A note with a story they can repeat. A 2008 Zimbabwe 100 Trillion or a Venezuelan note that stood for 100 million of the old currency works for almost anyone, because the number on the note starts the conversation.

What is a good banknote gift under $50?

Two uncirculated 2021 Venezuelan 100 Bolívares notes for $41, a pack of 100 consecutive Venezuelan 2 Bolívares notes for $39, or a four-note Lebanese set for $40, at Planet Banknote prices as of October 19, 2026.

Should I give a graded or an ungraded banknote?

Ungraded uncirculated notes are the better choice for a first gift and for a set someone will handle. A PMG-graded note arrives sealed in a holder with a certified grade, which suits a serious collector or a trophy piece.

How do I wrap a banknote without damaging it?

Keep it in a currency sleeve or rigid holder, put it in a flat box or a stiff card, and wrap the box. Never fold, tape or clip the note itself.

Are these real banknotes?

Yes. Every note in this guide is a genuine issue of the country named, not a replica. Most were never circulated.

When should I order banknote gifts for Christmas delivery?

Early. For delivery by December 25, 2026 inside the contiguous United States, USPS recommends mailing by December 17 for Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Add a few days for the dealer to pack and ship.
