Zaïre 1996 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres Pick 77 Mobutu PMG 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated

This Banque du Zaïre 1996 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres banknote is Pick P-77, certified by PMG as 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated. The PMG holder further identifies Printer: HdMZ, serial number H7847136D, watermark: Mobutu, and Signature #11. The EPQ designation confirms PMG’s assessment of Exceptional Paper Quality.

The face is dominated by a large portrait of Mobutu Sese Seko in military uniform at right, reflecting the highly personalized state imagery characteristic of Zaïre during his rule. The denomination 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres appears prominently across the design, while a leopard vignette and the Banque du Zaïre title reinforce national and regime symbolism. The orange, olive, and pale green color scheme is paired with complex geometric security patterns and a vertical security feature.

The reverse is more restrained, placing the enormous 100,000 denomination at center with ornamental guilloche patterns and the Banque du Zaïre name below. The anti-counterfeiting warning at lower right is printed in French, consistent with the country’s official monetary presentation during the period.

This note belongs to the final years of the nouveau zaïre, the currency introduced in 1993 as part of an effort to replace the heavily depreciated earlier zaïre. The reform did not restore lasting monetary stability, and inflation continued to erode the currency through the mid-1990s. As a result, progressively larger denominations entered circulation, making the 100,000 Nouveaux Zaïres an important artifact of the country’s worsening economic and political instability.

The year 1996 is especially significant because it falls near the end of the Mobutu era. Zaïre was renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997 after Mobutu’s government collapsed, and the nouveau zaïre itself was soon replaced. Notes such as this therefore document not only monetary inflation but also the final phase of a political system that had defined the country for decades.

Certified PMG 65 EPQ Gem Uncirculated, this example combines strong preservation with a historically important late-Zaïre denomination, a prominent Mobutu portrait, and direct association with the final monetary years of the regime. It is an appealing choice for collectors of African paper money, Zaïre and Congo currency, inflation-era banknotes, political portrait notes, and high-grade certified world currency.
