ND (1900-14) Mexico Banco Oriental 10 Pesos Specimen PMG 66 EPQ P-S382s Gem UNC

This stunning note is an ND (1900-1914) 10 Pesos Specimen issued by El Banco Oriental de México in Puebla, a regional bank during Mexico’s pre-revolutionary banking era. Graded PMG 66 EPQ Gem Uncirculated, it stands among the finest examples, with Exceptional Paper Quality and original selvage included.

The front design features a portrait of Manuel Payno, an important Mexican writer and statesman, set within ornate guilloche patterns. To the right, an intricate vignette showcases a panoramic view of Puebla with the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes rising majestically in the background. The red overprint “SPECIMEN” and zero serial numbers confirm its non-circulating proof status, originally produced for archival and reference purposes.

The reverse displays an elaborate geometric design framing the seal of the Banco Oriental de México, with the Latin phrase ANGELIS SUIS DEUS MANDAVIT DE TE (“For He will command His angels concerning you”), surrounding a detailed image of the Puebla Cathedral—an important symbol of the city’s religious and cultural heritage. Printed by the renowned American Bank Note Company, the engraving quality is exceptional, with sharp details and balanced artistry.

This note belongs to the Mexican Revolutionary-era banknote system, when regional banks issued their own currency under federal charter, making these pieces historically important. Specimen notes are particularly scarce, as they were not issued for circulation and often survived only in very limited quantities.

Collector’s Value:
With its high Gem Uncirculated PMG 66 EPQ grade, striking design, and status as a scarce specimen issue, this 10 Pesos note is a premium addition for collectors of Mexican paper money, Latin American banking history, and ABNC artistry. A rare opportunity to own a museum-quality note from Mexico’s revolutionary banking era.
