Description
Hungary 1946 100,000,000 B.-Pengő Blue Hyperinflation Banknote P-136 PMG 55
This dramatic Hungary 1946 100,000,000 B.-Pengő banknote is Pick P-136, certified by PMG as About Uncirculated 55. Printed in a distinctive blue color scheme, it belongs to the extraordinary final phase of Hungary’s pengő currency and represents one of the immense denominations created during the country’s post-World War II hyperinflation. The denomination “B.-Pengő” referred to billió pengő in contemporary Hungarian usage, with this note representing 100 quintillion pengő (10²⁰ pengő).
Hungary’s 1945–1946 monetary collapse is regarded as one of the most extreme hyperinflationary episodes ever recorded. As prices accelerated at extraordinary speed, the Hungarian National Bank was forced to introduce progressively larger denominations, moving through pengő, milpengő and ultimately B.-pengő units simply to keep currency practical for everyday transactions. The 100,000,000 B.-Pengő was among the final pengő notes released during this crisis and appeared in July 1946, only shortly before the collapsing currency system was replaced.
The vast face value makes this type especially evocative of the economic conditions of the period. Although the printed number appears almost incomprehensibly large, relentless depreciation meant that even these enormous denominations rapidly lost purchasing power. The pengő was ultimately abandoned in favor of the Hungarian forint in 1946, closing one of the most remarkable chapters in twentieth-century monetary history.
Certified PMG 55, this example offers collectors the combination of third-party grading and one of the most recognizable late-stage Hungarian hyperinflation denominations. Its enormous nominal value, blue design, and direct connection to the final days of the pengő make it particularly compelling for collectors of Hungarian paper money, world currency, hyperinflation issues, and historically significant twentieth-century banknotes.
