1863 $20 Legal Tender Note Fr.126b PMG 63CU Civil War Era Currency New Series

PMG comments on restoration on our current offering also, but it is well executed and hidden within the design.

Presented here is a visually impressive 1863 $20 Legal Tender Note, cataloged as Fr. 126b, and certified by PMG as Choice Uncirculated 63. Issued during the height of the American Civil War under the Act of March 3, 1863, this iconic large-size United States note represents one of the most historically important and artistically admired types in all of American paper money.

The face of the note features a stately central vignette of Liberty holding a sword and shield, symbolizing the preservation of the Union during one of the nation’s most turbulent periods. Surrounding the design is intricate green cycloidal lathework, engraved with assistance from the geometric lathe techniques pioneered by Cyrus Durand, whose innovations helped create the complex anti-counterfeiting patterns seen on early U.S. currency.

This example bears the coveted New Series 21-28 Chittenden | Spinner signature combination and is identified as New Series 23 pp B. The vivid inks, sharp detail, and outstanding visual balance make this note particularly appealing for the type. Large-size Legal Tender notes from this era are highly sought after due to their connection to Civil War finance and the emergence of federally issued paper currency in the United States.

One of the most attractive features of this representative is its unusually balanced and full margins. Many notes from this series were cut rapidly from their original sheets during wartime production and therefore display uneven borders or tight framing. The strong face-to-back registration and pleasing centering seen here are notably uncommon and greatly enhance the note’s eye appeal.

The reverse displays an ornate green design with bold denomination counters and intricate geometric engraving work that perfectly complements the detailed artistry of the face. Certified by PMG as Choice Uncirculated 63, this note retains excellent originality and presents beautifully for the assigned grade.

It should also be noted that the PMG holder carries a Restoration comment on the reverse label. Despite this notation, the note maintains exceptional display quality and remains an impressive collectible example from one of America’s most iconic currency series.

Collector’s Value
Civil War-era Legal Tender notes remain cornerstone pieces in advanced U.S. currency collections, and the 1863 $20 denomination is especially admired for its classic Liberty vignette and ornate engraving. With strong centering, attractive margins, and a desirable Choice Uncirculated grade, this Fr. 126b note offers both historical importance and outstanding visual appeal for collectors of early American paper money.
