Description
ND (1974-79) Iran 5000 Rials Consecutive Pair PMG 63 EPQ & 53 EPQ Pick 106c Young Shah Pahlavi
Presented here is an attractive consecutive pair of Iran, Bank Markazi 5000 Rials notes, cataloged as Pick 106c, dated ND (1974-79) and printed by TDLR. Both notes feature the portrait of the Young Shah Pahlavi and are preserved in PMG holders, with one certified Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ and the other About Uncirculated 53 EPQ. The pair carries consecutive serial numbers 7/1 956895 and 7/1 956894, adding a strong collector premium and visual appeal for those who appreciate matched runs.
These notes are official issues of Bank Markazi Iran from the final years of the Pahlavi era, making them historically significant examples of late pre-Revolution Iranian paper money. Currency from this period is widely collected for its connection to a major turning point in modern Middle Eastern history, when Iran still presented royal imagery and state symbolism that would soon disappear from circulation after the 1979 Revolution. As a result, notes of this type serve not only as monetary instruments, but also as artifacts from a vanished political and cultural era.
The design is especially elegant. The obverse displays a refined engraved portrait of the Young Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, surrounded by ornate Persian decorative patterns and sophisticated guilloche work in soft violet, rose, tan, and pale green tones. The reverse features an architectural vignette of a formal building and landscaped grounds, framed by intricate ornamentation and the bold 5000 denomination at top corners. These notes are admired for their balance of royal portraiture, Persian design tradition, and high-security engraving typical of major international printers.
From an authenticity standpoint, both notes are certified by PMG, one of the leading third-party paper money grading services. Each note is also designated EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality), confirming strong originality of the paper surfaces, an important feature for collectors seeking problem-free examples with premium eye appeal.
This pair is especially desirable because consecutive-number notes are often broken apart over time, making intact matched pairs more difficult to locate. The combination of consecutive serials, strong PMG grades, EPQ status, and the ever-popular Shah portrait type gives this offering broad appeal across world banknote, Middle Eastern, and Iranian currency collections.
Collector’s Value
Consecutive pairs of larger denomination Iranian notes from the Pahlavi period are always compelling, especially when both pieces are PMG certified and carry EPQ designations. This pair offers historical importance, elegant design, and matched serial-number appeal in one presentation, making it a smart addition for collectors who value originality, visual harmony, and iconic pre-Revolution Iranian banknotes.
