Description
ND (1974-79) Iran 500 Rials PMG 66 EPQ Pick 104b Young Shah Pahlavi Gem Uncirculated
Offered here is a striking Iran, Bank Markazi 500 Rials note, cataloged as Pick 104b, dated ND (1974-79) and certified by PMG as Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. Printed by TDLR, this impressive issue features the Young Shah Pahlavi watermark type, signature #16, and serial number 113/329255. It is a high-grade example from the final royal era of Iranian paper money, a period especially admired for its elegant engraving, vivid color, and historical significance.
This is an authentic official issue of Bank Markazi Iran, encapsulated by PMG with the desirable EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) designation. That added designation confirms strong originality and premium paper quality, making it especially appealing to collectors who seek attractive, problem-free notes. Banknotes from the late Pahlavi period remain popular because they represent the last generation of pre-Revolution Iranian currency and capture a distinctive moment in the nation’s monetary history.
The obverse is beautifully designed, featuring a formal portrait of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi at right, surrounded by intricate Persian ornamental patterns and detailed multicolor security-style printing. The note’s palette of soft peach, green, black, and pastel highlights creates exceptional visual balance, while the ornate denomination panels and decorative motifs give it a sophisticated and unmistakably Iranian character. The combination of royal portraiture and refined geometric design makes this one of the more visually engaging Shah-era issues.
The reverse is equally memorable, highlighted by a dramatic central image of paired winged mythological creatures flanking an ornamental pillar or stylized floral device. This bold symbolic design gives the note a commanding visual presence and distinguishes it from more conventional architectural types. The surrounding use of gold, green, and pastel tones adds depth and elegance, making the reverse especially attractive in display.
As a Pick 104b example graded PMG 66 EPQ, this note offers an excellent blend of high technical quality, originality, and collector appeal. Gem-level examples of pre-Revolution Iranian notes are always in demand, especially when they combine strong color, premium certification, and one of the classic Shah portrait designs.
Collector’s Value
High-grade Iranian notes from the Pahlavi era continue to attract collectors for their artistry, history, and increasingly recognized appeal in world paper money. This PMG 66 EPQ example stands out for its premium grade, original paper quality, and especially dramatic reverse design, making it a superb addition to any collection of Iranian, Middle Eastern, or world banknotes.
