Description
Costa Rica Banco de Costa Rica 5 & 10 Colones Remainder Note Pair PMG 65 66 EPQ ABNC
This exceptional Costa Rica Banco de Costa Rica remainder note pair consists of the 5 Colones and 10 Colones denominations, printed by the renowned American Bank Note Company (ABNC) in the early 20th century. These notes were prepared for issuance but never released into circulation, surviving instead as official remainders preserved in outstanding condition.
Historical Significance
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Costa Rica relied on foreign printers—most notably ABNC—to produce its national currency. These Colones issues reflect the country’s economic development and modernization during this period. As remainders, they offer collectors a rare opportunity to acquire pristine examples of notes that never experienced commercial use.
Design and Features
-
5 Colones (Pick S173r, ND 1901–1908)
Features a classical allegorical female figure seated within an agricultural landscape, symbolizing prosperity and stability. The note is richly printed with layered red, green, and black guilloché work and bold denomination counters. -
10 Colones (Pick S174r, ND 1901–1908)
Displays a powerful steam locomotive vignette, representing progress, industry, and transportation. Deep green and orange tones combine with intricate engraving and symmetrical borders typical of ABNC’s finest work.
Both notes showcase exceptional engraving depth, vibrant multicolor underprinting, and balanced classical composition.
Authenticity and Certification
Both notes are professionally certified by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) and encapsulated for long-term preservation:
-
5 Colones – PMG 65 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (Remainder)
-
10 Colones – PMG 66 Gem Uncirculated EPQ (Remainder)
The EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) designation confirms original paper surfaces with no pressing, restoration, or chemical treatment.
Remainder Status
The remainder designation confirms these notes were never issued for circulation. Their survival in Gem condition makes them significantly more desirable than circulated counterparts and ideal for advanced collectors.
