Historical significance – centenary of Greater Lebanon
On 1 September 1920, the French High Commissioner proclaimed the State of Greater Lebanon, expanding the older Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate into a larger entity that roughly corresponds to modern Lebanon.
The 2020 polymer 100,000 Livres commemorative marks this centenary, highlighting major landmarks from Beirut and Byblos and linking ancient Phoenician seafaring to the modern republic. Issued just as the country’s financial crisis deepened, it has quickly become a symbolic piece of recent monetary history.
Design & features
Obverse (Arabic side)
-
Main vignette: Nejmeh (Parliament) Square in central Beirut, long associated with independence and parliamentary democracy, with the clock tower rising at the center.
-
Left: The arched baptistry entrance of Saint John-Marc Church in Byblos, animated by the new CINEMA™ security feature that creates apparent motion and shifts between 1920 and 2020 motifs when the note is tilted.
-
Right: Large cedar-shaped transparent window containing CCL Secure’s VIVID™ Colour element: the cedar appears monochrome in transmitted light but becomes full-color and fluorescent under UV.
-
Background: Intricate green and yellow geometric patterns with Arabic legends and 100th-anniversary references.
Reverse (French side)
-
Central scene: The Pigeon Rocks of Raouché, natural sea arches off the Beirut coast, beneath a cloudy sky.
-
Right: A stylized Phoenician trading ship, recalling Lebanon’s maritime heritage.
-
Upper right: The centenary legend “100 ANS” integrated into the design.
-
French text “BANQUE DU LIBAN – CENT MILLE LIVRES” completes the bilingual layout.
Security & polymer technology

CINEMA™ dynamic image in the church arch.
-
VIVID™ Colour cedar window with strong UV response.
-
Tactile marks near the corners to aid visually impaired users.
-
Complex fine-line printing, microtext, and multitone tints across the polymer substrate.
Remarkable denomination
The 100,000 Livres is the highest standard denomination of the Lebanese pound series, and this 2020 polymer issue stands apart as a one-year commemorative type distinct from the paper 100,000 notes that preceded it.
Collector’s value
With its cutting-edge polymer security, bold cedar-shaped window, and historically rich imagery of Parliament Square, Byblos, and Raouché, this centennial issue has quickly become a must-have for modern world paper money collectors. The PMG-certified piece on offer brings together advanced technology and national symbolism in one large-format showpiece, ideal for Lebanon, polymer, or “anniversary” themed collections.
