Historical significance – 50 years of the central bank
Established by the Code of Money and Credit in 1964, Banque du Liban took over note issuance and monetary policy from the earlier Bank of Syria and Lebanon. Half a century later, this polymer 50,000 Livres marks the bank’s 50-year role at the center of Lebanon’s financial system, from the “golden age” of Beirut banking through civil war and reconstruction.
Design & features
Obverse (Arabic side)
-
Dominant image: The modernist Banque du Liban headquarters building in Beirut, viewed from an angle that emphasizes its grid of windows and architectural lines.
-
At upper right, a large calligraphic “50” with the dates 1964–2014 in Eastern Arabic numerals marks the anniversary.
-
A vivid gradient background moves from blue into orange and violet, overlaid with a matrix of small squares and microtext that echo the façade’s rectilinear design.
-
The familiar cedar tree appears again within a transparent window, linking this note visually to the 2013 and later polymer issues.
Reverse (French side)
-
Full-width perspective of the central bank building, this time seen from below, with the large “50 / 1964–2014” legend in Western numerals overlaying the structure.
-
French legends “BANQUE DU LIBAN – CINQUANTE MILLE LIVRES” and the denomination “50,000” appear in multiple positions for clarity.
-
The color palette continues the blue-to-gold gradient with complex guilloche patterns across the polymer substrate.
Security & polymer technology
-
Clear window with green metallic cedar tree element.
-
Fine microprinting around the building and in the colored grid.
-
Multi-color underprint and latent features that respond under UV, all benefiting from the durability and crisp printing of polymer.
Remarkable denomination
Like the 2013 independence issue, the 50,000 Livres was among the top denominations in Lebanese circulation when released, chosen to give the anniversary note a prominent, practical role in everyday transactions.
Collector’s value
This 2014 polymer commemorative offers a perfect companion to the 2013 independence and 2020 Greater Lebanon issues, forming the “central bank” chapter of a Lebanon polymer set. Its modern architectural design, bold color gradients, and cedar-window security feature make it one of the most visually striking Middle Eastern banknotes of the 2010s. A PMG-certified example like this slots beautifully into polymer, architecture, or Middle East-focused collections.
