Historical significance
The Australian Kookaburra silver series, launched in 1990, was one of the first modern bullion programs to feature annually changing reverse artwork, helping spark global interest in collectible bullion coins.
By 2004, the series had become firmly established among stackers and numismatists alike. The huge 10 oz format was struck in much smaller numbers than the 1 oz coins, aimed at serious silver buyers and collectors who wanted a dramatic showpiece as well as substantial bullion weight. With only 2,270 coins minted, this 2004 issue is one of the harder large-format Kookaburras to locate.
Design and features
Obverse:
The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley’s well-known effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The surrounding legend reads “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 10 DOLLARS”, with the initials IRB below the bust.
Reverse:
The reverse is dedicated to Australia’s iconic laughing bird. A large kookaburra is shown perched on a branch with a second bird in flight behind, giving a sense of both scale and movement. The outer ring is inscribed “THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 10 OZ .999 SILVER 2004”. The design mirrors the 1 oz 2004 Kookaburra but on a dramatically larger 10 oz canvas, allowing every feather and texture of the birds to stand out in bold relief.
The high-quality strike and frosted devices against satiny fields (as seen through the NGC holder) give the coin a near-prooflike appearance while remaining a Mint State bullion issue.
Remarkable denomination
At 10 troy ounces of fine silver and with a face value of $10, this coin is both a substantial bullion ingot and an official legal-tender issue. The combination of large size, low mintage, and the ever-popular Kookaburra motif makes the 10 oz denomination one of the most sought-after formats in the Perth Mint’s silver range.
