Description
1991 Argentina 500,000 Australes Banknote Pack (100 pcs) P-338 Hyperinflation Era Circulated Lot
Offered here is a circulated bundle of 100 authentic 500,000 Australes banknotes, issued in 1991 by the Banco Central de la República Argentina and catalogued as Pick #338. This high-denomination note was printed at the height of Argentina’s severe hyperinflation crisis, just before the Austral currency was replaced by the Peso Convertible in 1992.
The obverse features a finely detailed engraving of Manuel Quintana, President of Argentina from 1904 to 1906, whose leadership reflected a period of modernization and national growth. The reverse portrays a seated allegorical figure of Liberty, holding a torch and resting beside a national shield—symbols of enlightenment, vigilance, and the Argentine Republic’s enduring ideals.
At the time of issue, the 500,000 Australes denomination represented an astonishing sum, but inflation eroded its value almost immediately. By the early 1990s, entire stacks of these notes were needed for everyday purchases, making them a defining symbol of economic instability and currency devaluation.
This 100-note circulated pack offers a remarkable historical snapshot of the late 1980s Argentine economy. Every note stands as a genuine artifact of one of the most dramatic monetary collapses in modern history.
