1946 Hungary 10,000,000 Adopengo (10 Septillion) P-141 Tízmillió USED Hyperinflation

The Hungary 1946 10,000,000 Adópengő (10 Septillion Pengő) banknote, catalogued as P-141, is a significant example from Hungary’s hyperinflation era following World War II. Known as one of the highest-denomination banknotes ever issued, this Tízmillió Adópengő note (meaning “ten million tax pengő”) was part of the final series of Pengő notes issued before the complete collapse of the currency. While not in uncirculated condition, this used banknote remains a fascinating historical artifact.

Design and Features: The 10,000,000 Adópengő note features a minimalist yet elegant design. The obverse side prominently displays the denomination "Tízmillió" (10 million) along with the term "Adópengő," which was the tax-adjusted variant of the rapidly devaluing Pengő. Ornamental borders and floral patterns surround the text, reflecting Hungary’s characteristic design style of the era. The reverse side continues with geometric designs, framed in rich brown tones. Despite its high denomination, the design is simple, underscoring the emergency nature of these banknotes issued in the chaotic economic environment of 1946.

Historical Significance: This 10,000,000 Adópengő banknote is a vivid reminder of Hungary’s hyperinflation crisis following World War II, one of the worst cases of inflation in modern history. By mid-1946, the Hungarian government was printing increasingly larger denominations as the currency’s value plummeted. The Adópengő series was introduced to reflect inflation-adjusted values for tax purposes, as standard Pengő notes became practically worthless. The 10,000,000 Adópengő note, representing a value equivalent to 10 Septillion Pengő, was one of the last printed before the currency was replaced by the Forint in August 1946.

Collector’s Value: As a used note, this 10,000,000 Adópengő banknote carries the wear and handling marks typical of circulation, which tell the story of its journey through one of the most economically challenging periods in Hungary’s history. Despite its condition, the sheer rarity and historical importance of this banknote make it a valuable addition to collections focused on hyperinflation currency or post-war European history. Its astronomical face value, combined with its status as part of the final series of Pengő notes, ensures its continued interest among collectors.
