Description
1944 Mexico Silver Peso NGC MS66 Radiant Liberty Cap High Grade Gem
This is a 1944 Mexico Silver Peso, certified by NGC with an impressive grade of MS66, making it a gem-quality example of this classic Mexican issue. Struck at the Mexico City Mint, this peso is composed of .720 silver (12g actual silver weight) and represents one of the last series of silver pesos issued before postwar debasement reduced silver content in later years.
The obverse features the iconic radiant Phrygian cap with the word “Libertad” at its center, symbolizing freedom and independence. Rays of light extend outward dramatically, with a wreath of oak and laurel encircling the denomination and date below: UN PESO 1944 M. The reverse displays the Mexican national emblem—an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent—surrounded by the legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS and the silver content 0.720.
The 1944 peso carries historical importance, issued during a period when Mexico’s silver coinage was still circulating widely across the Americas and used in international trade. Its silver purity and bold patriotic design made it both a functional currency and a national symbol.
Collector’s Value:
With its strong strike, bright luster, and certification as MS66 by NGC, this coin ranks among the finest survivors of its type. Such high-grade examples are highly desirable to both Mexican coin specialists and world silver collectors. This piece combines historical appeal, classic design, and investment-quality preservation—an outstanding opportunity to add a gem-certified silver peso to your collection.
