Description
1944 Mexico Silver Peso NGC MS66 Liberty Cap Radiant Design Gem High Grade
Offered here is a stunning 1944 Mexico Silver Peso, graded MS66 by NGC, a gem-quality survivor from Mexico’s classic silver peso series. Struck at the Mexico City Mint, this coin contains .720 fine silver (12 grams actual silver weight), making it a substantial piece of mid-20th century silver coinage.
The obverse displays the bold radiant Phrygian cap of Liberty inscribed LIBERTAD, a long-standing national emblem of independence. Rays extend outward in dramatic symmetry, while an oak and laurel wreath encircles the denomination UN PESO and date 1944. Below the wreath lies the Mexico City Mint mark (M). On the reverse, the national arms of Mexico dominate the design: an eagle perched on a cactus, grasping a serpent in its beak and talon, with the inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS and the silver fineness 0.720 above.
This 1944 issue reflects a period when Mexico’s silver coins were trusted in trade across the Americas and beyond. The peso’s striking imagery and strong silver content made it both a circulating currency and a proud expression of national identity.
Collector’s Value:
NGC certification at the lofty MS66 grade places this coin among the finest known survivors of its type. The combination of radiant luster, attractive toning, and remarkable preservation makes it a highly desirable addition for advanced collectors of Mexican coinage or world silver crowns. A choice gem like this is increasingly difficult to acquire and offers both historical charm and numismatic prestige.
