1904 Mexico Banco Peninsular Mexicano 50 Pesos PMG 40 Pick S461 M557
Description
Offered is a 50 Pesos note issued by Banco Peninsular Mexicano and dated 16 de Abril de 1904, catalogued as Pick S461 / M557. This striking piece has been certified by PMG as Extremely Fine 40, providing independent confirmation of its authenticity and originality. Printed by the renowned American Bank Note Company, it represents one of the more visually impressive large-denomination issues from Mexico’s private banking era.
Historically, this note sits in the final phase of Mexico’s Porfirian period, when powerful regional banks such as those in Yucatán played a central role in local commerce and trade. The large red “Banco Peninsular Mexicano” overprint across the face signals the change in bank title from the earlier Banco Mercantil de Yucatán issue, illustrating the wave of consolidations taking place in the country’s financial system in the early 1900s. Surviving overprinted pieces from this transition are far scarcer than their parent types.
The design showcases ABNC’s elaborate craftsmanship. At left and right are finely engraved female portraits in detailed ovals, framed by intricate guilloché and multiple denomination counters of “50”. The orange and black underprint gives the note an unmistakable presence, while the central medallion bearing the large “50” anchors the layout. The green Yucatán state seal and vivid red serial numbers add further color contrast, making this a note that immediately commands attention in any display.
For collectors of Mexican private banknotes and Yucatán issues, this 1904 Banco Peninsular Mexicano 50 Pesos overprint type offers an excellent combination of historical interest, attractive ABNC design, and certified originality. Examples of this catalog number are not often seen, especially with a clear red overprint and third-party grading—an ideal centerpiece for an advanced Mexico or Latin American paper money collection.
