Description
1891 Mexico Banco de Zacatecas 50 Pesos P#S478r PMG 55 AU Remainder Ultra Rare
Offered is a beautiful 50 Pesos remainder from El Banco de Zacatecas, catalogued as Pick S478r / M578r and dated to the early private banknote era around 1891. This impressive large-format note has been authenticated and graded by PMG as About Uncirculated 55, confirming both its originality and excellent paper quality for the type. As a remainder, it was never fully issued for circulation, helping preserve its sharp detail and fresh appearance.
Historically, Banco de Zacatecas served one of Mexico’s major silver-mining regions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Private banks such as this were authorized to issue their own circulating currency, but relatively small print runs and heavy usage in mining and agricultural economies mean that survivors—especially high-denomination notes—are genuinely elusive today. Remainder pieces like this 50 Pesos are an important window into that era, showing the full artistry of the design without the wear of daily commerce.
The face of the note is a showcase of American Bank Note Company engraving. At left, a field worker leans on his tool amid rural scenery, symbolizing the labor and agriculture that underpinned Zacatecas’ economy. The central vignette depicts a young girl feeding a burro, a charming everyday scene rendered in fine detail and framed by ornate lathework and large “50” denomination counters. At right appears a finely engraved portrait of a young officer in uniform within an elaborate oval frame. Subtle yellow and blue underprints, intricate guilloché borders, and the large “CINCUENTA PESOS” panel at the bottom complete a design that is both picturesque and technically sophisticated.
In higher grades with original paper quality, Banco de Zacatecas notes are rarely encountered, and this 50 Pesos remainder is regarded as incredibly rare in any collectible state. For the specialist in Mexican private bank issues or ABNC artistry, it represents a top-tier opportunity: a large, charismatic type note with strong regional history and a design that displays beautifully in any advanced Latin American paper money collection.
