1878 8TF Morgan Dollar VAM-7 NGC MS65+ Star Tripled E Multicolor Toning
Description:
This 1878 8 Tail Feathers (8TF) Morgan Silver Dollar, attributed as VAM-7, is a stunningly toned and technically exceptional example of this popular first-year subtype. Graded MS65+★ by NGC, the coin earns the Star designation for its remarkable eye appeal, showcasing a vibrant canvas of ocean-blue, fire-red, and caramel-gold toning that radiates across both sides with gem-quality luster.
The VAM-7 variety is easily identified by a sharply tripled E in E PLURIBUS UNUM and a distinct die line cutting through the center of the A in STATES. These markers confirm the die pairing used during the early, experimental stages of Morgan dollar production in 1878, when the U.S. Mint tested and later transitioned away from the eight-feathered eagle reverse.
With only approximately 40 known die marriages for the 8TF subtype, VAM-7 is a notable attribution, and specimens in MS65+★ are exceedingly scarce, especially with such stunning natural toning. The minor field marks present are negligible and do little to detract from the coin’s commanding presence and overall vibrancy.
Collector’s Value:
This MS65+★ Morgan Dollar is a prime opportunity for collectors of toned U.S. silver, early Morgan dollar varieties, or VAM specialists. The combination of its premium grade, elite visual toning, and important VAM attribution makes it a standout piece with crossover appeal between condition-focused and variety-driven collectors.
