1875 Paris IL $10 National Currency Fr.416 The First National Bank CH#1555 PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated
A superb example of late 19th-century American banking history, this $10 1875 National Currency Note was issued by The First National Bank of Paris, Illinois under Charter #1555. Graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64, this note represents one of the finest preserved survivors from a limited run that has supplied generations of collectors with beautifully preserved Series 1875 $10 and $20 notes.
Authenticity
Professionally certified by PMG (Paper Money Guaranty), this note is guaranteed authentic and accurately graded. The label denotes “Previously Mounted”, referencing minor evidence of prior mounting on the reverse—its only noted imperfection. The pen-signed signatures and crisp paper confirm genuine issue and careful preservation since the 19th century.
Historical Significance
Issued during the post-Civil War “National Banking Era,” this 1875 note was part of a uniform national currency system established to stabilize America’s financial markets. The First National Bank of Paris, Illinois, served its growing agricultural and industrial community during an era of Midwest expansion. These local national banknotes connected rural America to the federal banking system, making them vital tools of regional commerce.
Design and Features
The obverse (front) of the note features two detailed vignettes: “Franklin and Electricity”, depicting Benjamin Franklin with his famous key and kite experiment, and an allegorical female figure representing liberty and progress. The red Treasury Seal and charter number 1555 contrast beautifully with the black and gray intaglio printing, while the ornate border work emphasizes its $10 denomination.
The reverse (back) showcases one of the most famous engravings in U.S. banknote artistry: “De Soto Discovering the Mississippi”, a dramatic depiction of Hernando de Soto’s 16th-century expedition. The green-inked back design also includes a majestic eagle and the motto “In God We Trust.”
