Description
1850s Louisiana $1000 Canal Bank Note PMG 64 Remainder New Orleans Obsolete Currency Rare
Offered here is a stunning and historically rich $1000 banknote issued in the 1850s by the New Orleans Canal & Banking Company, graded PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated Remainder. This note is cataloged as LA105G80a, and as a remainder, it was never issued for circulation, preserving its exceptional condition and showcasing the detailed artistry of antebellum American banking history.
The obverse features a masterful vignette of allegorical female figures representing Prosperity and Liberty, flanking a heraldic shield topped by a majestic eagle. To the left, a classical figure with a spear and shield sits before an industrial backdrop—a nod to commerce and strength. To the right, maritime imagery highlights the economic importance of trade and shipping to New Orleans. The large denomination "1000" appears boldly in all corners, and the engraved text promises payment of "One Thousand Dollars to the bearer on demand" in New Orleans, though no serial number or signatures were ever applied.
Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson—one of the most prominent banknote engravers of the 19th century—the note is a testament to the high craftsmanship of pre-Civil War American currency. The reverse is equally ornate, rendered in deep red ink with elaborate floral patterns and bold typography centered around the denomination and the words CANAL BANK NEW ORLEANS.
These high-denomination remainder notes were never intended for day-to-day commerce but rather served large-scale financial transactions or reserves. Surviving in uncirculated condition, especially at this lofty grade, they are highly prized by collectors of obsolete U.S. banknotes and Southern Americana.
Collector's Value:
This $1000 Canal Bank note from 1850s New Orleans is a showpiece of antebellum American finance, combining rarity, historical depth, and superb artistic design. Graded PMG 64, it stands just shy of Gem Uncirculated and is among the finest preserved examples. An exceptional addition to any serious collection of obsolete or Southern banknotes, this note offers both visual appeal and historical gravitas from a pivotal era in U.S. economic development.
