Description
1840s–50s Louisiana $1000 Citizens' Bank Note PMG 66 EPQ Remainder Gem Uncirculated Rare
This exquisite and historic $1000 banknote from the Citizens' Bank of Louisiana, issued in New Orleans during the 1840s–1850s, represents one of the finest surviving examples of antebellum American currency. Graded an exceptional PMG 66 EPQ (Exceptional Paper Quality) Gem Uncirculated, this remainder note is cataloged as LA15G54b and stands as a museum-worthy artifact from the golden age of obsolete U.S. banknotes.
The obverse of the note is a masterclass in 19th-century banknote engraving, executed by the renowned firm Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson of New Orleans. At its center is an allegorical figure seated with a sheaf of wheat and a cornucopia—symbols of abundance and agricultural prosperity—surrounded by rich classical motifs. The layout incorporates bilingual inscriptions in both English and French, highlighting the Creole influence of Louisiana during this period.
The denomination “1000” is prominently repeated across the design, rendered in bold type and ornate cartouches, emphasizing the extraordinary face value—one thousand dollars, a vast sum at the time. The typography is elegant, with the bank name and promise to pay elegantly engraved:
“The Citizens’ Bank of Louisiana will pay One Thousand Dollars to the bearer on demand.”
The reverse is printed in vibrant red ink and features a large, eye-catching “1000” flanked by allegorical figures within each digit, with the inscription "Citizens' Bank of Louisiana" in strong, patriotic lettering. The color contrast between the obverse and reverse only enhances the note’s visual impact.
As a remainder note, this piece was never signed or issued, preserving its pristine, uncirculated state. Its combination of historic relevance, impeccable artistry, and exceptional grade makes it a rare survivor of pre-Civil War Southern banking.
Collector's Value:
This Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $1000 remainder note is a top-tier collectible for specialists in obsolete Southern currency, 19th-century American banking, or high-denomination notes. With its PMG 66 EPQ grade, bilingual design, and lush allegorical engravings, it represents the pinnacle of antebellum banknote printing and preservation. A rare opportunity to own a high-value note from one of Louisiana’s most historically significant financial institutions—seldom seen in this state of perfection.
